My colleague Wojciech Pacuła’s magazine, highfidelity.pl, and hifistatement.net have traditionally recognised one component at each of the trade fairs in Munich and Warsaw that had impressed us over the previous six months. As High End was taking place in Vienna this year, we will henceforth be referring to the Vienna and Warsaw Edition of the Awards.
My colleague chose the integrated amplifier darTZeel Audio CTH-8550 Mk II and explained his choice as follows: “The sound of the darTZeel integrated amplifier is quite easy to describe: it’s warm, rich, full-bodied, natural, and smooth. I could add a few more adjectives that would also be accurate. When we listen to music with it, we don’t really hear those qualities; they don’t even come to mind. And that’s because they create something much greater than themselves, something that transcends those limitations. … Because the softness and warmth here mean a natural entry into the sound – silky, soft, yet well-controlled and detailed. So this won’t be an amplifier for everyone; there’s no such thing as „swiss knife” in audio. However, if you’re looking for the inner truth of music, you have to give it a listen. It can successfully replace many – even very good – sets with separate preamplifier and amplifier. This is a device that transports us to a better world.”
For me, once again, technical innovation was the deciding factor. So I opted for the Ortofon MC Vertex: “It is the first cartridge to feature a Vertex diamond. As far as I am aware, this is the first new stylus cut in around 40 years. … It is characterised by a smaller tracking radius and a larger contact radius – and you can hear the difference: alongside all its sonic merits, the MC Vertex impresses with exceptionally low groove noise. But it would be unfair to focus solely on this aspect, as the developers have applied the same level of care to the rest of the components. The Vertex is one of the very best cartridge systems in the world: it delivers that little bit more in every respect – more dynamics, more space, more definition, more transparency, more timbres – and it is therefore simply more fun to listen to. As the immense capabilities of this great Ortofon are evenly distributed across all disciplines, it does not develop any characteristic sound of its own. It performs with remarkable coherence and homogeneity.”
So, the second Statements in High Fidelity this year go to the darTZeel Audio CTH-8550 Mk II and the Ortofon MC Vertex. Congratulations to the winners!
